Anti-wrinkle treatments, also known as Botox, continue to increase in popularity, however, it’s important to know what to expect following your session to avoid worsening side effects or irritating the treated area.
In this guide, we’ll cover everything you should and shouldn’t do following an anti-wrinkle treatment to ensure your results are quick and effective.
Aftercare tips for anti-wrinkle injections
EXPECT SOME MINOR BRUISING & SWELLING, do not touch or rub the treated area for up to 24 hours after treatment
With most injectable treatments, some minor side effects will occur. Don’t panic. They often reduce within the first few days and keep to the treated area. During the 24-48 hours after your treatment, fight the urge to rub, scratch, or touch the treated area. Doing so may impact your results and cause you discomfort.
Keep the treated area clean
This one should go without saying, however please keep the treated area clean. Although it is advised to not rub the treated area, use a warm, damp cloth to brush the treated area to keep it clean without causing any discomfort or issues.
AVOID INTENSE WORKOUTS FOR THE FIRST 72 HOURS FOLLOWING TREATMENT
Although exercising is an essential part of a routine for some, please refrain from any strenuous physical activity for at least 72 hours following treatment. As the anti-wrinkle solution will be injected into your face, bruising is often caused by breaking the blood vessels.
These blood vessels can heal and recover quickly, however, strenuous exercise will increase your heart rate. Doing this will make the vessels more visible, resulting in delayed bruising following your treatment. Therefore, we recommend keeping your blood pressure as low as you can to let your facial rejuvenation work its magic.
Avoid wearing any makeup or facials for the first 72 hours following treatment
To give your skin the best opportunity to provide the results you need, avoid wearing any make up for the 3 days following your treatment. This will help to prevent the risk of any foreign substances from getting into the injection site.
AVOID ALCOHOL FOR 72 HOURS BEFORE AND AFTER YOUR TREATMENT
Now if there was a time to celebrate, it would be for achieving your new and improved, desired look. With that said, we recommend holding off the celebrations and any intake of alcohol for the 72 hours prior to and following your anti wrinkle treatment.
Alcohol is known to thin the blood which can lead to prolonged side effects. Drinking alcohol before or after your treatment within 24 hours will significantly prolong the healing process.
AVOID PROLONGED SUN EXPOSURE AND HOT ENVIRONMENTS FOR 72 HOURS FOLLOWING TREATMENT
We would stongly recommend against hot environments such as being out in the sun, tanning beds, saunas or hot tube journeys for the first 48 hours following treatment. Now, this doesn’t mean avoid the sun and sit in the dark for two days.
Where possible, try to limit exposure to hot environments. Maybe have your treatment in the colder months of the year or at a time when you have the ability to stay home and recover.
Apply spf 30+ sunscreen daily
This one is more than just an aftercare tip, but more of a tip for anyone who wants to give their skin the best chances of preventing early ageing. We recommend all patients at our clinic to use SPF daily to keep skin hydrated, moisturised and protected from drying out and causing wrinkles, fine lines and other skin issues.
