Aftercare Guide for Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is an extremely popular solution to unwanted hair and an effective way to achieve smooth skin. Following a session of laser hair removal, it’s important to know what to expect to avoid enhancing side effects or irritating the treated area.

In this guide, we’ll cover everything you should and shouldn’t do following a laser hair removal treatment to make sure your results are quick and effective.

Aftercare tips for Laser Hair Removal

Gently apply a cold press to the treated area

Use a clean, soft washcloth with cool water to cool the treated skin for 15 minutes at a time. This can also be done by using an ice pack wrapped in a paper towel. Doing this will help to reduce the temporary swelling and sunburn sensation after your treatment.

Protect your skin from the sun and avoid overexposure

Try to keep out of the sun during the first week or so following treatment. Now, we don’t mean for you to become a part-time vampire after your session, but we recommend wearing protective clothing to shade the sun and avoid sunbathing or spending prolonged time in the sun.

The UV rays from the sun will irritate the skin following laser treatment and could cause problems. The best and most popular time of year to receive this treatment is often winter as the days are shorter and the sun is not as intense.

Avoid applying fragranced lotions or perfumes onto the treated area

Doing so may irritate the skin, as the treated area will be sensitive to chemicals and other non-prescribed lotions and creams. This also includes deodorant if the treatment was for the underarm. We would also recommend avoiding tanning or SPF lotions for the first week following treatment until your side effects have reduced.

Apply any practitioner-approved or prescribed lotions and creams

Your practitioner may prescribe a steroid cream to minimise any pain and discomfort following your treatment. You may also take over-the-counter medications for pain relief such as paracetamol. Use within the recommended dosages and only use if needed. Patients usually do not need this, however, do not hesitate if pain relief is needed.
