Do Dermal Fillers Hurt?

Used as a popular cosmetic treatment to restore volume, reduce the visibility of wrinkles, and balance areas of the face, Dermal Fillers have become the go-to option.

As with most injectable treatments and injections in general, there is often a concern as to whether or not the procedure will hurt and how it will feel, which can often put people off this excellent treatment.

In this blog, our injectable specialists from our clinic in Essex will explain what you can expect from your treatment and options for keeping you as comfortable as possible throughout a Dermal Filler treatment.

What is the pain level of Dermal Fillers?

Unfortunately, there is no simple yes or no answer to this, as everyone is different and has their own level of pain tolerance. A few factors can contribute to the discomfort you feel, including the area being treated, the type of filler used, the technique used, the size of the needle, and most importantly, the injector's skill.

When carried out in an experienced and professional way, people often describe the sensation as a slight pinch to the skin, causing very little pain, if any at all. Most patients consider dermal fillers tolerable and relatively pain-free.

Finding the right practitioner

When looking for the right clinic, you want to find a practitioner that is medically trained, and CQC registered. This way, you’ll know that your procedure is being carried out by trained professionals who will likely have years of experience providing injectable treatments.

At our Essex clinic, all our practitioners have a wealth of experience in medical and aesthetic injectable treatments, allowing you to have this valued peace of mind.

The type of needle used

Unlike previous injections you may have had for flu or the vaccine, the needle used for dermal fillers is extremely fine. The needles we use in the clinic are some of the smallest and finest available. This allows for minimal discomfort and enhanced precision when delivering your filler.

As previously mentioned, it is unlikely that you will feel anything more than a slight pinch on the skin.

Local anaesthetic is available if needed

If you feel that you would like something to numb the treated area, local anaesthetic in the form of a gel rub is often available to prevent any feeling during the procedure. You should make your practitioner aware of your request before any treatment is started so that they can accurately prepare for your treatment and ensure your experience is an enjoyable one.

Side effects following dermal filler treatment

As with most injectable treatments, there are a few side effects to be aware of. Nothing to worry about though, as these side effects often keep to the treated area, are mild, and reduce significantly within the first few days following treatment.

Side effects of dermal fillers include:

  • Bruising

  • Redness

  • Swelling

  • Sensitive to touch

  • Itching

If your side effects become uncomfortable, off-the-shelf painkillers such as paracetamol will help to ease any discomfort. This shouldn’t be necessary, and these side effects often reduce in around 48 hours.
